Cheap VPS on the US East Coast: buy New Jersey, not "USA"
"USA VPS" is a marketing region, not a location. The country spans 70 ms coast to coast — a Dallas server is mediocre for New York and Los Angeles alike. If your traffic is American-east or split US/EU, the answer has a name: the northern New Jersey data-center belt.
Why NJ is the East Coast's server room
Northern New Jersey hosts a massive share of "New York" infrastructure — Manhattan real estate is for offices, the fiber and the racks live across the Hudson. That geography buys three things: 1–3 ms to NYC, single-digit reach to the Boston–DC corridor, and a seat at the American end of the main transatlantic cables — which is why a single NJ box serves London and Amsterdam at a workable ~70–85 ms. Full measurements are in our Virterion New Jersey review.
The cheap-VPS filter, US edition
| Check | Why it filters junk |
|---|---|
| KVM, stated explicitly | Container plans at $2–4 are oversold pools; evenings expose them |
| Named metro, not "USA" | Vague location = reseller roulette; you want NJ/NYC named |
| Renewal price = signup price | Teaser rates make "cheap" a one-month illusion |
| Human support hours | US budget tier is notorious for 48-hour ticket queues |
What passed our filter
Evidence limitation: no reproducible first-hand benchmark, billing or support-response records were supplied for this update. Treat performance and service quality as unverified; test the selected plan and confirm renewal terms yourself.
Honest limits: no US West region — California-first audiences should look at the bigger-map hosts in our alternatives list — and no built-in DDoS scrubbing tier, so game servers under attack pressure need a specialist.
What $6 runs from NJ
| Workload | Verdict |
|---|---|
| US-facing site, blog, portfolio | Comfortable |
| API/webhook endpoint for US services | Ideal — latency is the product |
| Bot serving US + EU users | Best single-server compromise |
| Small store | Start here, step to High CPU as it grows |
